Target SIP Calculator

Target SIP Calculator

Most people invest first and hope. This calculator flips it: start from the goal — ₹1 crore for retirement, ₹30 lakh for a child's education — and work backwards to the monthly SIP that gets you there.

It's also the fastest reality check in personal finance. Want ₹2 crore in 15 years at 12%? You need about ₹33,500/month starting today. If that number shocks you, better to know now — you can extend the timeline, raise the return assumption, or start with a step-up SIP.

How to use this calculator

Four steps, thirty seconds.

  1. 1
    Step 1.

Enter your target corpus. Be specific — a real goal (₹50 lakh for a home down payment in 8 years) beats a round number.

  2. 2
    Step 2.

Set expected return and years. Use a return slightly below your best hope; use the actual years you have.

  3. 3
    Step 3.

Read your required monthly SIP. That's the cheque you need to write every month, starting now.

  4. 4
    Step 4.

If it's unaffordable, adjust. Add 2–3 years, or switch to a step-up SIP starting smaller. Don't just crank up the return assumption.

How this calculation works

The formula (SIP formula solved for M): M = FV × r / [((1+r)n − 1) × (1+r)], where FV is the target, r the monthly return, n the months.

M = 1,00,00,000 × 0.01 / [((1.01)120 − 1) × 1.01] = ₹43,041

Worked example: ₹1 crore target, 12% p.a., 10 years → ₹43,041/month. You invest ₹51.6 lakh; compounding contributes the remaining ₹48.4 lakh.

Algebraic inversion of the standard SIP future-value formula (AMFI methodology).

Frequently asked questions

What if I can't afford the required SIP?

Three levers: more time (start earlier or delay the goal), a step-up SIP starting smaller, or a smaller goal. Raising the assumed return is the dangerous lever — don't.

Should I include inflation in my target?

Yes, ideally. ₹1 crore in 15 years at 6% inflation buys what ~₹42 lakh buys today. Either inflate your target or think in today's money.

Does this account for taxes?

No — it projects pre-tax corpus. Equity LTCG (12.5% above ₹1.25 lakh/year) applies on withdrawal; factor a haircut for large goals.

Can I use this for non-SIP goals?

The math is SIP-specific (monthly investing). For a one-time investment, use our Lumpsum Calculator.
